East of Eden (1)

1. I remember where a toad may live and what time the birds awaken in the summer - and what trees and seasons smelled like - how people looked and walked and smelled even.

2. I remember that the Gabilan Mountains to the east of the valley were light gay mountains full of sun and loveliness and a kind of invitation, so that you wanted to climb into their warm foothills almost as you want to climb into the lap of a beloved mother.

3. They were beckoning mountains with a brown grass love.

4. The Santa Lucias stood up against the sky to the west and kept the valley from the open sea, and they were dark and brooding - unfriendly and dangerous.
“keep sth from sth”意为:使… “kept the valley from the open sea”就译作“挡在河谷和大海之间”。

5. Where I ever got such an idea I cannot say, unless it could be that the morning came over the peaks of the Gablilans and the night drifted back from the ridges of the Santa Lucias.
“Where I ever got such an idea”其实是跟在“I cannot say”的,因此译成汉语时应表达成“我说不清怎么会有这样的想法”或“我说不清哪来的这种想法”。

6. From both sides of the valley little streams slipped out of the hill canyons and fell into the bed of the Salinas River.
“From both sides of the valley”这个介词短语其实是个限定成分,故译成定语“峡谷两侧的”修辞“小溪”,“slipped out of the hill canyons”意译成“顺势而下”,一来避免重复,二来更能体现“slip”这个动词的含义。

7. In the winter of wet years the streams ran full-freshet, and they swelled the river until sometimes it raged and boiled, bank full, and then it was a destroyer.
“they swelled the river”中的“they”指代前面的主语“the streams”,译成汉语时,主语就省略了,因为前面的分句中已有“水流”两个字,故直接译作“引起河面暴涨”。
“bank full, and then it was a destroyer”译成“泛滥成灾”,既通顺,又能完成体现出原文的意义。

8. The river tore the edges of the farm lands and washed whole acres down; it toppled barns and houses into itself, to go floating and bobbing away.
“tore the edges of the farm lands”的字面意思是“撕破了农田的边缘”,故译作“冲进农田”。

9. The tules and grasses grew back, and willows straightened up with the flood debris in their upper branches.
“with the flood debris in their upper branches”这个介词短语作方式状语,在译成汉语时通常被处理成一个分句。

10. The Salinas was only a part-time river.
